It is possible to overdrive the sound with the EQ leading to distortion. By default Sound Control lowers the volume when you change the EQ to prevent distorted audio from being played. It is possible to disable this behavior, but only do so if you are sure that your EQ will not lead to distorted audio.
You will find a checkbox that toggles this clipping protection in Sound Control's General Preferences.
